An investigation of rehabilitation and welfare service needs and utilization experience in middle to old age people with mental disabilities: Including assist needs of activities of daily living and life satisfaction

Abstract
Objective : The purpose of this study was to compare the rehabilitation and welfare service needs and utilization experience of middle to old age people with mental disabilities, and examined the relationship between assist needs of activities of daily living(ADL) and life satisfaction.

Methods : This investigation used raw data of National Survey of the Disabled Persons (2017). Of the 6,549 all subjects in the raw data, 152 subjects were analyzed middle to old age people with mental disabilities. The rehabilitation and welfare service needs and utilization experience are based on the questions of five institutions, which are vocational rehabilitation facilities, welfare center for the disabled, community mental health centers, rehabilitation hospital for the disabled, and psychiatric rehabilitation centers. Statistical methods was performed analysis between the two groups and Spearman correlation analysis.

Results : old age people had lower education level and higher age of disability emergence than middle age people(p<.001). The rehabilitation and welfare service needs and utilization experience of 152 middle-aged people with mental disabilities were followed by welfare center for the disabled(14.5%) and community mental health centers(9.9%). The most needed institutions were community mental health centers(46.1%) and psychiatric rehabilitation centers(42.1%). middle age people required more vocational rehabilitation facilities and welfare center for the disabledthan old age people(p<.05). old age people had a higher assist needs of ADL than middle age people(p<.05). As the onset duration increased, the needs of ADL(r=.290, p<.01) were higher and life satisfaction(r=.206, p<.01) was lower. The lower the age of disability emergence was, the higher the assist needs of ADL(r=-.165, p<.05) and the lower the life satisfaction (r=-.205, p<.05).

Conclusion : Current findings suggest that vocational rehabilitation for middle age people with mental disabilities should be expanded and community mental health centers and psychiatric rehabilitation centers for middle to old age people with mental disabilities should be expanded.
